Product Trend of 2017: Create an Experience!

In today’s society, we’re constantly being bombarded with advertising and media shouting, “Buy this!” “Buy that!” or “Our product is better!” In fact, the average consumer is exposed to more than 1,500 advertising messages a day. With this much noise and clutter, it’s becomingly increasingly hard for marketers to reach their target audiences.

With Millennials being the largest group of consumers, there have been countless purchasing behavior studies conducted to discover what makes Millennials tick. The findings? About 72% prefer to spend more money on experiences than on material things (i.e.: vacations, events, concerts, activities, adventures). Furthermore, 77% of Millennials say that some of their best memories are from an event of live experience they attended or participated in. (Perhaps these statistics are a result of being fed up of being treated like piggy banks by advertisers?)

In our industry, the Promotional Products industry, these facts can be alarming and present obstacles to marketing and purchasing professionals. How do you appeal to the majority of consumers when the very items you’re trying to sell are in fact made up of material and not experiences? Solution: Incorporate an experience into the products.

This may sound obvious, but it takes a lot of creativity and innovation to be successful at making a product that is a combination of these two worlds. Nevertheless, suppliers are starting to catch on quickly. (It’s no surprise that this was one of the trends we found at the PPAI Expo earlier this month.)
