A Burst of Boundless Energy: Running the Car2Go Relay!

I was excited to participate again this year in the Car2Go Marathon Relay, joining the Boundless runners in another successful race! What was a casual, fun event from previous years has turned out to be a competitive race for the Boundless Team, which has been participating for the past six years. We are proud to support this great Austin community event, benefiting the Livestrong Foundation. Livestrong’s mission is to inspire and empower people affected by cancer, maintaining the belief that “unity is strength, knowledge is power, and attitude is everything.” The foundation is the beneficiary of a multitude of major athletic events throughout the nation.

The relay took place in sunny Austin this past Sunday, September 20th, and man, was it a hot one! The race consisted of six equal 4.37-mile legs, allowing for teams as small as two and as large as six to complete a full 26.2-mile marathon. Each participant ran a 4.37-mile loop and handed the baton off to a teammate at the Relay Exchange Zone to continue the race.

We had three teams signed up to represent Boundless for the Corporate Division and one of our teams placed second in the division, finishing at 3:45:07—that’s an average pace of 8:35/mile! I was happy to see that our teams consisted of a wide range of runners, from fresh young faces who are new to Boundless, to the seasoned staff members, as well as friends and family members. It was epic! The spirits were high even after running in nearly 100-degree weather. Some of the comments I heard throughout the day included, “I practically died out there, but that was fun!” and “Let’s start training for the next race!” I’m excited to hear we have some resilient teammates who won’t let the heat get them down.

Get to know some of our top runners!

Tim600x600Tim Dietrich, Developer at Boundless

Tim was active in some cross-country meets and lots of soccer in high school. He remains an avid runner to this day! Tim was actually nursing a soccer injury and wasn’t sure if he would be well enough for race day. He ran the last leg. Tim is a beast!

Jennifer600x600Jennifer Petersen, Sales Support at Boundless

Jen has been running since high school and is also a devoted volleyball player. In addition, Jen ran track in college, specializing in the 800m run for Western Oregon University.

Mackenzy600x600Mackenzy Cade, Sales Support at Boundless

Mackenzy has only been running for three to four years. He started running to lose weight, at first hated it, but has now become a pro! We are glad he stuck with it.

Henrik600x600Henrik Johansson, CEO at Boundless

Henrik is a fierce competitor, and always brings his A-game. He also has a fun side, just look at his selfie during his run!

A couple of other true athletes came out of the woodwork from staff friends and family. A team member’s husband is a personal trainer but this was his first attempt at running 4.3 miles. It was an impressive first showing! Another friend of the staff who joined us has several half marathons under her belt, loves to run to stay in shape, and proved to be a great asset. However, the biggest accomplishment by far came from the last runners in the fifth and sixth leg who picked up the tail end of the run when the Texas temperature started to rise above the 90-degree level. Those runners deserve a special shout out: Robert Freeman, Rasmus Wendt, Jennifer Petersen, Tim Dietrich, Diana Perez, and Mario Estrada—awesome job, team!

This team experience was a great way to bring the Boundless family together outside of work, and has become yet another tradition that we are proud to participate in. It was also a perfect opportunity to show Brand Love by sporting our awesome new Boundless shirts! We all felt proud to wear our red and represent the company—it also made it easy to spot each other to hand off the baton!
