TL;DR: As Salesforce was boosting understanding of its AppExchange program, it wanted to introduce a new character that would help customers: “Appy.” The catch was, no one knew what Appy would look like. The Boundless team used renderers and created several mold options to bring Appy to life, generating buzz among developers and partners.
Overview
Salesforce helps businesses with customer relationship management with cloud-based software that can be used on any platform. Since its inception in 1999, Salesforce’s services have helped businesses with service, data, marketing, manufacturing, and more. In 2005, it launched AppExchange, designed as a marketplace for apps to run on its Force.com platform.
Strategy & goals
Salesforce wanted to promote the introduction of a new character named “Appy,” a bobcat who knows all things Salesforce and guides users in the AppExchange program. Salesforce asked for an Appy bobblehead, but the challenge was that they had no 3D concept of what Appy looked like from all angles.
Results
Working with Boundless and several renderers, and after presenting several mold options, Appy was brought to life. Boundless and its team were able to create the look — and eventual feel — of the character that had previously only existed as a name and concept. His attitude and helpful Boy Scout attire gave customers and employees the imagery of a bobcat with answers.
Conclusion
The resulting Appy Bobblehead generated buzz with Salesforce’s partners and became a unique collector’s item that went above and beyond expectations.
