TL;DR: As Coinbase grew in 2021, it struggled to keep up with the demand for creative branded merchandise. By partnering with Boundless, we helped develop a product-service system that automated corporate purchases and served employees through a self-service portal.

Founded in 2012, Coinbase is an online exchange where people can buy and sell cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The innovative, forward-thinking company was all-in on remote work from the start (it still doesn’t have a physical HQ!) so some changes for pandemic workers weren’t immediate at Coinbase.

But Coinbase had a lot going on in 2021. The brand grew tremendously and it struggled to keep up with the demand for creative Coinbase-branded merchandise. It was also trying to lead a remote-first workforce and the complexities of taking the company public. Needless to say, Coinbase needed someone to come in and manage its promotional products.

Boundless stepped in as an agile partner for Coinbase. We acted as a steward for the Coinbase brand for corporate purchases, employee purchases, print services, and even employee recognition and rewards. Our goal was to take all of the heavy lifting off of Coinbase and provide a cohesive, on-brand experience across every aspect of its business.

Today, all Coinbase buyers can order products through an equitable, retail-like, self-service portal. We even automated corporate purchases by integrating Coinbase’s ERP with its ordering program which streamlines back-end processes to make accounting and cost allocation as easy as the front-en ordering process.

The results have been amazing. Not only has Coinbase preserved its brand and ensured compliance, but it has also saved countless hours and money with this new approach.
