Gone Fishin’

2009-april-_fishing-in-east-texas-002Last Thursday and Friday, I took a much needed break to go fishing with my dad (and detox from the daily grind). We were traveling to some of our favorite watering holes in East Texas to chase the big black bass that roam the bottom of the deep waters. I think fishing is one of the greatest pastimes one can experience—everyone should give it a try. If you have kids, please teach them how to fish. Those memories will last a lifetime and will give them some life lessons to take with them into the real world.

Fishing makes me a more centered human being. There’s nothing but open water, a line and some fresh sunshine. It doesn’t get more relaxing than that, especially when one of those elusive bass tugs on the line.

In the process of taking Boundless to the top of the industry, I tend to get lost in the weeds because our opportunity is so big (and I’m so impatient), so I want to work my tail off to position the company for maximum success. My management team has been telling me for the last few years to take some down time. I guess dealing with me in a hyper-anxious state can get kinda old. As I sit here on day two of my technology-free trip (no iPhone—this is unprecedented), part of me is missing work, but part of me is basking in the experience.

With our respective industries all taking it in the shorts, my recommendation (echoed by my management team and my wife) is to stop and smell… something. This economy will beat you down, chew you up and drain all your energy if you let it. Find time to get to your “happy place” so that the journey of life doesn’t pass you by.

My challenge: do one thing next week just for you! Take at least one hour and go make a memory. For me, it was catching a 10-pound bass with my pop. For you, who knows?
