Gift Smart
Three tips for creating memorable holiday experiences.

For this edition of CultureBuzz, we’ve combed the online business community for some advice on making those on your holiday list feel truly valued (and impressed) this holiday season.

Tip #1 Tight budget? Thoughtfulness goes a long way.

“One of the nicest [corporate holiday gifts] I received was an embroidered/personalized fleece throw blanket. I got it about 8 years ago—still use it all the time. I think your gifts should convey thanks, acknowledge their importance to your business and come with a personal note. It doesn't necessarily have to have a big price tag attached—just thoughtful, useful and genuine.”

—Emily Meyers, Indiana

The fleece blanket idea that's kept Emily happy for 8 years!

Emily's advice on putting together a well-received gift is spot on. Gifts that the recipient can use year-round are always appreciated, and your gift will never fail to impress when sent with a handwritten note or holiday card. A high-end gift is always a hit, but if you’re looking for a way to make an impact without busting your budget, a genuine, personalized “thank you” paired with a well-chosen gift can be just as unforgettable.

Tip #2 Details count! Little touches can pay off big.

“At my wife's company holiday party, at each seat, there was a handmade bar of chocolate with the company's logo on it. While waiting to get served, we all decided to open it up--it was surprisingly good (and I'm pretty fussy about my chocolate!)”

—G. Conway, New Hampshire

It's often the smallest things that make the biggest impression. A surprise chocolate bar at each plate is a great way to start off a corporate dinner. Having the company logo emblazoned on the bar scores you extra points for cleverness and class. Whether you’re planning the party or attending as a guest, find a thoughtful way to thank the guests or the host.

Tip #3 Not sure? Gifts with a conscience give recipients the warm fuzzies.

“Last year, a friend gave me a charity gift certificate. I got to choose which charity to which I gave. Last year, I gave lotus bamboo plants to business contacts. It was representative (believed to bring prosperity and blessing) and it will last.”

—Brooke Randolph, Indiana

If you're completely unsure of what your recipients would love to receive, try a more generic (but equally meaningful) approach: give a gift that's socially or environmentally conscious. Let your gift recipients choose a charity to receive a donation on their behalf in lieu of a gift (organizations like DonorsChose.org facilitate this service). If you prefer a more traditional gift, try giving green. Bamboo is the ultimate green gift—it's both highly renewable and incredibly beautiful. A bamboo plant is a great gift to brighten up any work space.
